NGOs' Association demands Special School for mentally challenged children in A&N Islands



Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Associaiton, A & N Islands has demanded establishment of a Special School for mentally ill and mentally retarded children. In a letter addressed to the Secretary-cum-Director of Education, A & N Administration, the General Secretary of the Association, Shri T.S.Sreekumar has invited attention to the deplorable condition of mentally challenged children of the Island territory. He pointed out that ‘in the name of inclusive education’ the Education Department is giving admission to these children alongwith normal students and they are completing their school education without gaining any life skill.

He also invited attention of the Administration to various sections of ‘The Persons with Disablities Act, 1995’  for the welfare of differently abled persons and provisions in the Act for establishment of Special Schools for those need special education.

He concluded his letter by demanding establishment of a Special School with residential facilities for hundreds of mentally challenged children of Andaman Nicobar Islands.
