No. 3-12/CC/2011 Date: 26.09.2011

News Item

The inauguration of the signature campaign in Andaman and Nicobar Islands against the Pension Fund Regulatory & Development Authority (PFRDA) Bill which is pending before the Standing Committee of the Parliament, was held at 6.30 p.m. today (26.09.2011) at Crusade House, Phoenix Bay. Shri Pronob Banerjee, former President of the Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, inaugurated the signature campaign by signing on a copy of the Memorandum to be submitted to the Prime Minister. Addressing the gathering, Shri Pronob Banerjee said that the New Pension Scheme introduced with effect from 1.1.2004 is part of the wrong economic policies being pursued by the successive central governments. Shri Lawrence Fernandez, former President of the Association in his address said that the major political parties, both in the ruling coalition and opposition, in the country have come together to support the PFRDA Bill while it was introduced in the Parliament during the last Session of the Parliament. Shri D. Ayyappan, General Secretary of the Association said that the abolition of beneficial pension scheme, which was in existence before the independence of the country, and introduction of New Pension Scheme in its place, has put lakhs of government employees who entered government service from 1.1.2004 into mental tension and agony about their future as there is no guarantee that the money being deducted from their salary will be returned to them on their retirement. He said that the money being deducted from the employees covered under the NPS is being invested in the share market. According to the PFRDA Bill even the employees recruited before 1.1.2004 can also be brought under the New Pension Scheme, he said. Shri G. Sasidharan, former Organising Secretary of the Association also addressed the gathering while Shri TS Sreekumar, Assistant General Secretary proposed a Vote of Thanks. A large number of government employees attended the function. The Association will carry out a massive signature campaign throughout the islands in the coming two months.
