May Day observed befittingly in Andaman Nicobar Islands


Centre of Indian Trade Unions has organized various programmes throughout the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to celebrate the May Day 2015 today the 1st May, 2015.   The main programme was held at Port Blair where the May Day procession began from the Crusade House premises at Phoenix Bay at 4 p.m.  The procession which went round the important areas of the town culminated in a public meeting at Tiranga Park. Hundreds of workers and employees from Port Blair/South Andaman areas attended the procession.   Addressing the public meeting at Tiranga Park, Shri B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU, A & N State Committee recalled the historical strike of workers in the Hay Market of Chicago in the month of May, 1886 on the demand of  8-hour working day.  He said that in India, the successive central governments have been curtailing the various rights enjoyed by the working class in this era of globalization, liberalization and privatization.   D. Laxman Rao and SP  Kalairajan  also addressed the meeting which was presided over by  Shri B. Haridas.  

 At Diglipur, a procession was taken out in the Diglipur Bazar  in which a large number of workers participated. Shri Ramjeeban Sarkar and Shri Madam Mohan Das led the programme.   At Rangat, procession was taken out at Rangat Bazar in which large number of workers participated.  At Baratang, the procession was taken out at Nilambur in which workers of Forest Department participated. In Little Andaman, the procession was taken out at Hut Bay Bazar  in which workers of  Forest Corporation and  other  departments  participated.  At Katchal, May Day procession was organized at Mildera.
