NGOs' Assn. & CITU jointly celebrate International Women's Day



          The Non-Gazetted Government Officers’ Association and CITU jointly organised a meeting at Hotel ACC, Mohanpura, Port Blair at 4 p.m. today 8th March, 2015 to celebrate the International Women’s Day. United Nation’s theme for the International Women’s Day -2015 “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity – Picture it” was the topic for the programe. Smt Nazreen Begum, an office bearer of the Association explained the origin and objectives of the International Women’s Day. She dealt with in brief the importance of celebrating this day and the impact it has created in the world.  
 Addressing the gathering, Shri D. Ayyappan, former General Secretary of the Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association  briefly explained the legislations enacted in India for the  protection and  welfare of the women and  said that failure of  its implementation  in a proper way led to the  widening disparity between men and women  and  the  subsequent  attack on the rights of the women.   He said that the women bear the brunt of the disastrous consequences of the wrong policies being pursued by the successive governments in this era of liberalization, privatization and globalisation.  Speaking on the occasion, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary of the CITU A & N State Committee   explained in brief the exploitation of women working  in the private sector in these islands.
          Participating in the discussion Smt Geeta Navin Bhatt, an experienced teacher of a School at Port Blair, traced the reason for the attack on the women to the degradation of moral values in the society. Smt Shabana Bibi stressed the need for enlightening unorganized women about their rights. Another teacher Ms. Anuja Rao emphasized the importance of inculcating moral values among the boys.    Smt Shanti,  Smt  Rani and   Smt Julie Jose  also  took part in the  discussion.  The thought provoking speech made by Miss Nausheen  Nazir,  a student  of Class  X  on the occasion was appreciated by all. 
Earlier, Smt TS Prem Latha welcomed the participants and guests in the programme.  Smt Usha Sharma, who presided over the programme, proposed vote of thanks. Shri HL Prasad, Acting President and other office bearers of the NGOs’ Association were also present on the occasion.  A large number of employees working at Port Blair and South Andaman areas participated in the programme.
